Bullet

The official Rottweiler of Pet's Rest

He came to us via Dr. Clarence Uthe, San Bruno Veterinary Hospital. He was an 18 month old confused puppy. His previous three homes were not satisfactory. His mood showed he needed a real home with lots of room to roam.

As the story goes, his original owners were getting divorced and they decided to put Bullet to sleep as a means of "settling the dog problem."

We rescued Bullet, but not without much consideration. We had lost our other dog, Piņon, and wanted another dog. Our thoughts were something small with handles that would travel well, as we are getting older.

Dr. Uthe suggested we try Bullet for the weekend and after more thought, I picked him up and put him in my mini-pickup next to me in the front seat. I gave him the once over and he was so big. I said "nice doggy" and brought him home.

He saw my wife and jumped on her and started licking her face. She said "we have a dog" and I agreed. His name was "Bull" and we hated that name. We decided to name him Bullet he seemed to like that name. That is the story of how we were blessed with our very own Rottweiler.

He just celebrated his 10th birthday and although he is still a virgin (not by choice) he is very happy and does enjoy a substantial following of fans. He does comfort the clients that visit and he loves to be pet by adults and children alike.

We go for walks everyday in the other 17 cemeteries in Colma. He thinks his mission in life is to post mail at every shrub, tree, or monument we encounter. He does have one really bad habit, that is, he loves to pee on fresh flowers. You can imagine the embarrassment we occasionally experience. We encountered a silver fox in Home of Peace recently. I put Bullet on the leash so as not to chase it away. Makes me glad that other animals still have a place to live in this automated world.

My 2 year old grandson, Anthony is 25 lbs. is still a little leery of woof woof. Bullet outweighs him by 100lbs but they are getting closer upon every meeting. Now every toy dog or real dog Anthony sees is named "Buddit." If you ask Anthony what Buddit is doing he says "Buddit making caca ina tree." It sure is fun to watch them bond and play together.

Bullet has been recently diagnosed with diabetes and he is now on daily insulin injections. He is doing "OK" but he we haven't stabilized him yet. We have to keep increasing his dose until we get the amount correct . This is a very frustrating part of pet ownership. He has always been healthy and always engaged in four wheel drive in his approach to life. He is our special gift from God.

Late August Bullet began developing cataracts in both eyes.   By October he was blind.  He did manage to get around the cemetery by smell and still was able to enjoy a walk and the opportunity to pee on fresh flowers.  In December we had his insulin stabilized and he had cataract surgery by Dr. C. Cook of Veterinary Vision and he did great.  He was like a new puppy.  He would play with his rope in the morning and look for his hidden cookies.  A return to frisky with a passion.

Last Monday I noticed that his mouth was pale, so we went to the vet for a blood test.  The results indicated a massive blood loss so we put him in intensive care for pets and they gave him four transfusions of the synthetic blood.   They thought he had a bleeding ulcer and put him on medications.  He seemed to be getting along a little better, so we brought him home to nurse him.  He did manage to come down to work this week and talk to the clients.

This morning Bullet passed away.  He was laying on the carpet and he tried to get up and join us for breakfast, but he fell.  I ran over to help him get in a more comfortable position.  I called his vet and then called Pet's Unlimited to see if they  had any whole blood and they said yes.  I was making arrangements to transport him and he just stopped breathing and passed away.

He will be cremated today and we will keep his remains with our other pets upstairs.  My wife and I have made a deal that the first one that goes takes the pets with him.

It is a sad sad day for Pet's Rest.
